Identification Issues

Taking it Easy 170

When it comes to identification I’m usually quite competent with birds and butterflies…some insects I’ve noticed can be somewhat trickier and need further research. This particular butterfly got me a bit confused…I think it may be a painted lady yet the lower half of of the wings looks more like a small tortoiseshell… πŸ˜•

Update 10.44pm…I should have searched better…This butterfly is called a Map! (Araschnia levana)
A fairly common species here in the Netherlands too…at least I’m living and learning! πŸ˜‰

  1. Baffled! Thought it might be easy… Very dark body with stripes should help, for a start. Used a standard online guide. No luck. Maybe a hybrid – a Tortoise Lady? Or Painted Shell? RH

    • I thought maybe a hybrid too…the pattern even reminds me a bit of a comma… One thing we can be sure sure about is that it’s from the Aurelia family! πŸ˜‰ Thanks for trying RH ! πŸ™‚

  3. All images are breath-taking, truly, and so many bug shots where I gasp while staring in shock and wonder, like that leather-jacket fellow… and the Longhorn Beetle going in after that spider, that’s all just amazing work… very pro! Sorry I’ve missed so much, I really am… Beautiful work my friend, you truly have a gift for the camera… The shots of the marsh are amazing as well, and I especially enjoyed the shots of the Bream. How amazing. You never see anything wild and free and so close like that here in Tejas! And the little bird you found in the tall grass, a curlew? Wow again! Heartical, you are a master at what you do! Thank you so much for sharing your gift with us! We can even learn a thing or two in the deal… πŸ™‚

    • Thank you Cissy ! πŸ™‚ …But really I’m the one who’s undergoing the steepest learning curve….the more I enter into this voyage of discovery, the more I realise how little I know. With this butterfly I got really lost with idendification so I went to an appropriate forum and asked…I laughed when they told me it was called a map…I’ll never forget the name of this beautiful creature ever again…We are all still learning Cissy! πŸ™‚
